Conservation and restoration of the Temple of Athena Nike, in accordance with the study by D. Giraud, has been in process since 2000. The serious damage and the structural problems evident in the temple, after the earlier restoration interventions of the years 1835-1845 and 1935-1940, demanded its complete restoration, with dismantling, restoring and resetting of its 319 members. |
Dismantling of the monument began in October 2000 and was completed in 2002. Structural restoration and conservation of the members was initiated at the same time. Conservation and restoration of the earlier poros naiskos of Athena Nike, preserved in the basement space beneath the monument, were likewise carried out, after its members had been dismantled. The launching of the new anastelosis was preceeded by the installation of a new bridge-crane on elevated rails, which meets the demands of the unique position of the monument. Likewise the necessary worksite infrastructure had to be constructed. |
In 2004, the reinforced concrete slab from the intervention of 1935-1940, on which the monument had been founded, was replaced by a specially constructed metal grid of stainless steel. The infrastructure and support of this construction make the basement space easier to visit and displays the architectural remains preserved there. Following the restoration of the krepis of the monument, the cella wall blocks were reset in a new arrangement so as to correct earlier mistaken settings. |

The anastelosis of the temple of Athena Nike will be completed with the addition of casts of the frieze, which is now exhibited in the Museum, of the cornice and of the east pediment of the temple. |
