Τhe Acropolis works on the Internet From its inception in 1975, the Committee for the Conservation of the Acropolis Monuments has had as its principle the transparency of its works, by means either of the dissemination of general information, or as publication of the results of the research that is carried out in connection with the works. At that time, thirty years ago, the means of distributing information were the usual ones: publications, lectures, international meetings and announcements. Today matters have changed: the "bearer of news" is now the Internet.
It is now commonplace to say that this new means of communication, continuously being improved, will be the basic means of disseminating information in the future. It has a direct international range and limitless possibilities for storing and for organizing information. The public to which it is addressed is not only composed of specialist scholars, who in any case would buy the books, retire to the libraries or attend a lecture. It is intended for all who are interested directly or indirectly in the interventions being carried out on the monuments of the Acropolis. New learning, both scholarly and technological, becomes common property with little difficulty.
Thanks to the possibility for funding rendered to the Acropolis Restoration Service by the operational programme "Information Society", we hope that in a short time all its archives will be digitised and available on the Internet. At present, we can hardly imagine the advantage to be gained from the generalization of the use of electronic media, both for the management/conservation/restoration of architectural monuments, and for general cultural development, local and widespread. |
