INTERVENTIONS PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE
The programmes for conservation and restoration of parts of the monument planned for the years after 2006 are the following:
1. Restoration of the west doorway wall of the cella
M. Korres' study foresees the removal of the lintel of the Balanos intervention, which had been constructed of reinforced concrete, and its replacement with four architectural members, in agreement with its original form. One of these will be made entirely of new marble, while the other three will combine ancient material with new fillings. Planned also is the conservation of the blocks of the west wall and, where necessary, the dismantling and structural restoration of those members.
2. Restoration of the lateral walls of the cella
This work of restoration is to be based on the existing studies by N. Toganidis and K. Paraschi (south wall), and N. Toganidis and K. Matala (north wall). The studies propose that the cella wall blocks be structurally restored and then reset in their original positions. In addition, 450 members that have already been identified are to be reset in the monument. Implementation of this programme will help to recover the structure of the temple walls and to display the architecture of the monument. To date work has proceeded on the restoration of the blocks of the north toichobate, on a number of orthostates and on part of the SE parastade.
3. Restoration of the west façade of the monument
The work calls for the dismantling of the ends of the pediment with the corresponding enablature and the structural restoration of these parts as well as other members still in situ that may require it. Identified ancient fragments are to be incorporated. An intervention on the inner side of the west pediment is also to be carried out. It comprises the dismantling of the crown blocks of the west side of the porch, the structural reinforcement and filling in of the architrave and frieze blocks without dismantling them, the dismantling and restoration of members of the north and south corners of the pediment and restoration of the blocks of the central part of the pediment. The relevant study is being made.
4. Restoration of the ceiling of the west colonnade
It is planned to reset the ancient beams that have been taken down from the monument, and the beams that were constructed in the mid-twentieth century, to some of which ancient fragments will be added. Following this, it is planned to reset the restored interbeam slabs and to rejoin them so that they can receive the new coffers that were made in 1953, in the restoration programme of A. Orlandos. The extent of the intervention is to be determined by a special study.
5. Restoration of the south side
The work calls for replacement of all the fillings of reinforced concrete in the south colonnade with new marble, the rearranging of the positions of the column drums and entablature members and the resetting in the monument of whatever scattered members have been identified. A study is planned.
6. Restoration of the floor of the temple
The ancient floor is to be filled in with new marble, the ancient slabs sealed and measures taken to drain the rainwater from the poros foundation of the temple. A study is expected that will define the method and extent of the intervention.
