Propylaia
INTERVENTIONS IN PROCESS
In process since 2002 is the programme for restoring the superstructure of the central building of the Propylaia, based on the approved study by T. Tanoulas and M. Ioannidou. The study describes analytically the existing condition of the architectural members of the monument, locates the areas affected and suggests the best way to intervene on the monument.
Gradual dismantling of the architectural members of the monument began in 2002 with the east portico and the north wall of the Propylaia. These were areas in which the intervention of N. Balanos had earlier been detected. In the course of the work it was discovered that Balanos had gone beyond the areas detected previously, either through research in the archives or by direct observation on the site. The dismantling was completed in June 2003.
At the same time structural restoration and conservation continued on the architectural members that had been taken down from the monument. These same works are continuing at present. When specified in the study as necessary, the architectural members are disassembled in the fragments into which they have broken and joining fragments are then mended with titanium and supplemented with new marble, in order to restore their structural independence. After their restoration and the conservation of their surfaces, the members are reset in their original positions. The central lintel in the doorway wall was likewise restored. This was achieved without removing it from the monument, in order to avoid upsetting the authentic structure.
A particularly important achievement has been the making of two Ionic column capitals entirely from new marble. These are accurate copies of the Ionic capitals of the west hall of the Propylaia. They were made during the period between 2002 and 2006. The column capitals have been set on the northeast and southeast columns of the west hall.
The intervention will restore the ceilings of the east portico and the west hall at the northeast corner of the monument. The restoration will exceed the areas of N. Balanos' intervention, roofing with ancient members sections of the central building over the central passageway. The intervention will finally solve the structural problems that had resulted from unsuccessful earlier interventions and it will significantly increase the legibility of the monument, making it more comprehensible to visitors.
