PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION "RECORDS IN MEMORY. RECALLING MOMENTS OF THE PROPYLAIA RESTORATION" IN LITHOUANIA

The photography exhibition entitled “Records in Memory: Recalling moments of the Propylaia Restoration” is on display at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania in Vilnius at the 5th floor Atrium until the 30th of September 2018.

 

The exhibition, designed by the Documentation department of The Acropolis Restoration Service and presented in 2016, comprises 44 photographs of 30cmx40cm, selected from YSMA’s archive. The photography exhibition presented the Propylaia of the Acropolis restoration works, and was organized in seven sections, aiming to promote, foremost, the contribution of people in the monuments restoration process.

 

The exhibition presented by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports as a contribution of the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in Vilnius, dedicated to the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Independence of Lithuania.

 

The Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic in Lithuania Dr. Vassiliki Dicopoulou invited Vasiliki Eleftheriou, Architect, Engineer, and Director of the Acropolis Restoration Service, Hellenic Ministry of Culture & Sports, to attend the inauguration of the exhibition and to conduct  a lecture about the restoration works at the Acropolis monuments.

 

The event took place at the National Library's Atrium on Wednesday the 12th of September, at 6.00 p.m.

 

After Dr. Prof. Renaldas Gudauskas, Director General of the National Library, greetings, the Ambassador Dr. V. Dicopoulou gave a speech about the importance of the Acropolis Monuments as a universal symbol of the Western civilization and the Cultural Heritage and the responsibility to preserve it for the world. The Ambassador made a touching reference to the lethal fire in Greece and expressed her condolences over the death of the propylaia restorer Makis Kladios whose portrait is displayed at the exhibition.

 

Τhe Director of the Acropolis Restoration Service, Vasiliki Eleftheriou conducted a lecture entitled ‘The Athenian Acropolis. The process of the monuments’ protection’, lasted 45 minutes, followed by a video presentation by YSMA that lasted 10 minutes.   

 

Μore than 100 people attended the event including the Ambassador of the Vatican, Spain, Armenia, Poland, Latvia, Ukraine, representatives from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Committee of  Greek-Lithouanian  Friendship, as well as Professors of Greek Studies in the University of Vilnius etc. contributing to the development of new forms of future cooperation between the two countries.
