The Information and Education Department of the Acropolis Restoration Service on the occasion of this year’s European Cultural Heritage Days (September 22-24, 2023) with the theme: “”Heritage and Tradition: Evidence of Yesterday in Today,” organized the educational program: “Stories of restoration on the Athenian Acropolis Monuments”. The program was carried out on Friday 22.9.2023 at the archaeological site of the Acropolis and was addressed to 54 students of the 1st Grade from the Ionideios Model High School of Piraeus.
In particular, this year’s theme concerned the way the heritage of yesterday becomes the heritage of today, and how this heritage can be protected and preserved for future generations. The students were informed about the causes of damage and the adventures that the Acropolis monuments have experienced over the centuries. Furthermore, they learnt about the means and practices applied in restoration today in order not only to protect and preserve the monuments but also to upgrade their value. The educational program was completed with an observation game where the students identified the differences between the current image of the monuments and that before the restoration works began. Photographic material from the YSMA archive was used to enhance the program.
