1975

Establishment of the Committee for the Conservation of the Acropolis Monuments (ESMA)

1976

Establishment of a technical office and an archive of the Acropolis Works

1977

  • Recording and extensive study of all the problems of the Acropolis monuments in collaboration with other scholarly foundations, such as the National Technical University of Athens, Centre for Nuclear Research “Demokritos”, the Institute for Geological and Metallurgical Research.
  • Transfer of the pedimental statues of Kekrops and his Daughter and Kallirrhoe from the West pediment of the Parthenon to the Acropolis Museum.
  • Temporary measures taken for protection of the monuments: roofing placed over the Porch of the Maidens and over the West Frieze of the Parthenon.

1978

  • Construction of a passageway for the circulation of visitors on the Propylaia-Parthenon axis.
  • Initiation of the work of recording the scattered members on the Acropolis Rock.

1979

  • Work of restoring the Erechtheion begins.
  • Caryatids transferred to the Acropolis Museum.
  • The work of stabilizing the rocky slopes of the Acropolis hill begins.

1981

  • The work of consolidating the 2nd (from the S) architrave block of the entablature of the Propylaia east stoa begins.
  • A narthex is set in the NE corner of the Parthenon after the February earthquake.

1982

Consolidation of the 2nd (from the S) architrave block of the entablature of the Propylaia east stoa completed.

1984

Installation of the Parthenon worksite begins.

1985

Installation of the Parthenon worksite finished.

1986

  • Beginning of the 1st anastelosis programme of the Parthenon (restoration of the east façade).
  • Beginning of work of surface conservation of the monuments in the Parthenon.
  • Transfer of pedimental sculpture (heads of the horses of the chariot of Helios) from the Parthenon east pediment to the Acropolis Museum.

1987

  • Work of restoration of the Erechtheion completed.
  • Launching of programme for digital management of the documentation of the Works
  • Educational programmes begin.

1989

Transfer of metopes from the east side of the Parthenon to the Acropolis Museum.

1990

  • Installation of the Propylaia worksite.
  • Beginning of dismantling of the ceiling coffers of the central building of the Propylaia, which had been restored earlier.

1991

Completion of 1st Parthenon anastelosis programme (restoration of the east façade).

1992

  • Consolidation of the rocks of the slopes of the Acropolis hill completed.
  • Restoration of the 5th column of the south side of the Parthenon.
  • Completion of dismantling of the coffered ceilings of the central building of the Propylaia, which had been restored earlier.
  • Transfer of the Parthenon west frieze to the Acropolis Museum begins.

1993

  • Transfer of the Parthenon west frieze to the Acropolis Museum completed.
  • Begin of dismantling of the sections of the side walls of the Parthenon cella that had been restored earlier.
  • Begin of the structural restoration of the coffers and beams that have been dismantled from the Propylaia ceilings.

1994

Database for Documenting the Erechtheion Restoration programme.

1995

  • Work of restoration of the Parthenon Pronaos begins.
  • Beginning of structural restoration of dismantled architectural members of the Parthenon Opisthonaos.
  • Conservation of the surface of the Erechtheion begins.
  • New programme of digital indexing of the documentation of the Acropolis Works initiated.

1996

Identification of scattered fragments of the Propylaia ceiling coffers completed.

1997

Consolidation in situ of the columns of the Parthenon Opisthonaos.

1998

  • Transfer of the frieze of the temple of Athena Nike to the Acropolis Museum.
  • Beginning of intervention on the south side of the east stoa of the Propylaia.

1999

  • Work completed on stabilizing in situ the columns of the Parthenon Opisthonaos.
  • Presidential Decree 97/1999 establishing the Acropolis Restoration Service (YSMA).

2000

  • The restoration of the temple of Athena Nike begins (dismantling of the temple is started).
  • Beginning of the work of structural restoration of the blocks of the Parthenon west frieze.

2001

  • Installation of the second construction crane to the north of the monument.
  • Beginning of 2nd phase of the restoration work on the Parthenon Opisthonaos.
  • Beginning of the restoration work on the north colonnade of the Parthenon.
  • Restoration work on the south wall of the east stoa of the Propylaia completed.
  • Consolidation of the central lintel of the Propylaia completed.
  • Installation of the programme for digital documentation-indexing of the Acropolis restoration works at the worksites of the Acropolis monuments.

2002

  • Restoration of the ceiling of the central building of the Propylaia begins.
  • Beginning of work of restoring the north wall of the Propylaia central building.
  • Works of dismantling the temple of Athena Nike completed.
  • Cleaning of the stones of the Parthenon west frieze begins.

2003

  • Installation of a new hoisting system (bridgecrane) in the worksite of the Athena Nike temple.
  • Design and construction of a special machine for cutting flutes in the column drums, or fillings of drums in new marble, in the Parthenon worksite.

2004

  • Work of restoration of the Parthenon Pronaos completed.
  • Work of restoration of the Parthenon Opisthonaos completed.
  • Work of cleaning and conservation of the Parthenon west frieze completed.
  • Restoration of the north wall of the central building and the east stoa of the Propylaia completed.
  • Conservation of the poros shrine in the basement space of the Athena Nike temple.
  • Installation of flooring in the form of a stainless steel grid over the basement space beneath the temple of Athena Nike.
  • Installation of lift on the north slope of the Acropolis for people with special needs.

2005

  • Installation and initiation of instrumental monitoring of structural damage in the Acropolis circuit wall.
  • Beginning of the work of backfilling the foundation walls of the Arrephorion.

2006

Completing the construction of Ionic column capitals made of new marble for the restoration of the Propylaia.

2007

  • Dismantling 6 ancient metopes from the west side of the entablature of the Parthenon north peristasis for protection.
  • The Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens installs the first accelerometer on the Acropolis.
  • The project “Development of Geographical Information Systems for the Acropolis of Athens” begins, it includes the photogrammetric surveying and the three-dimensional scanning of the wall and the Acropolis hill.
  • The completion of backfilling the foundation walls of the Arrephorion for protection.
  • Recording and documenting the poros architectural members found on the Acropolis rock.

2008

  • Research programme in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens examining the static behaviour of the Parthenon cella walls and seeking solutions for their restoration.
  • Installing a network of seven accelerometers on the Acropolis in collaboration with the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens.
  • Completing the restoration of the ceiling of the Propylaia west hall. Removing the scaffoldings and the bridge crane from the west hall.

2009

  • Completing the restoration in the west part of the entablature of the Parthenon north side.
  • Completing the restoration of the ceiling in the east stoa of the Propylaia. Removing the scaffoldings and the bridge crane.
  • Completing the cleaning of the Erechtheion coffered ceiling with laser light.
  • Completing the project “Development of Geographical Information Systems for the Acropolis of Athens”.
  • Signing a the memorandum of trilateral collaboration between YSMA, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Mie University of Japan for the installation of two accelerometers.

2010

  • Completing the restoration works in the Athena Nike temple.
  • Completing the restoration works in the north side of the Parthenon.
  • Placing the copies of the six metopes made of artificial stone in the west part of the Parthenon north side.

2011

  • Repositioning the Derrick crane from the north to the south side of the Parthenon
  • Beginning works on restoring the corners of the Parthenon west side.
  • Beginning restoration works on the orthostate of the Parthenon north wall.
  • Restoration works on the south wall of the Propylaia central building.
  • Beginning works on restoring blocks from the top of the Athena Nike temple bastion.
  • Conducting a research programme in collaboration with the University of Crete exploring suitable mortars for binding limestone.
  • Beginning three-dimensional scanning of the monuments’ architectural members.

2012

  • Expanding the accelerometer network of the Acropolis, supporting its operation and processing the collected measurements.
  • Completing the restoration work of blocks coming from the top of the bastion in the Athena Nike temple, and also the enhancement of the basement space in the same temple.
  • Beginning the work of restoring the south wing of the Propylaia.
  • Binding fragments of poros architectural members.
  • Beginning of the educational programme "Acropolis and Restoration".

2013

  • Beginning carving flutes in the column fillings of the Parthenon Pronaos.
  • Casting copies of the pedimental sculptures and metopes of the west side of the Parthenon.
  • Awarding ESMA with the Grand Prix of Europa Nostra in the category “Dedicated Service by individuals or organisations”, and the work of restoring the Propylaia with the prize of Europa Nostra in the category of “Conservation”.
  • Completion and posting on the Internet of the “Repository of educational content for the Acropolis”, in collaboration with the National Documentation Centre (EKT) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.

2014

  • Beginning repositioning architectural members on the two corners of the entablature of the Parthenon west side .
  • Beginning works on the west wing of the Parthenon.
  • Beginning restoration works on the south wall, between the 6th and 7th buttress.
  • Examining the fillings of the Acropolis rock after digging inspection openings in parallel with the wall.
  • Completing the restoration works on the NW column of the Propylaia central building.
  • Completing the conservation works on the Athena Nike temple.
  • Removing inscriptions from the archaeological site to the old Acropolis Museum.
  • The results of a research into finding the suitable filling and sealing mortar containing less cement.
  • Signing a memorandum of collaboration between YSMA and the National Documentation Centre (EKT) for the digital organisation and distribution of information on the Athens Acropolis restoration works.

2015

  • Completing the restoration works on the west side of the Parthenon.
  • Completing the repositioning of 28 orthostates of the north wall of the Parthenon cella.
  • Structural restoration on the ground of two blocks of the Parthenon west lintel.
  • Completing the restoration works on the south wing of the Propylaia.

2016

  • Anchoring the shale slopes on the Acropolis NW incline.
  • Beginning the conservation of the colonnade of the Propylaia north wing.
  • Repositioning worksite facilities and equipment in order to start new restoration projects.
  • Beginning a research project for the selection of suitable materials for the wall interventions.

2017

  • Beginning the restoration work on the Parthenon west pediment.
  • Beginning restoration works in the area B17 of the north wall of the Acropolis.
  • Donating and transporting the Derrick crane from the Parthenon to the NTUA Technological Park at Lavrio. Moving the Potain crane from the west side of the Parthenon to inside the monument.
  • Investigating whether a new structural stone was compatible for restoring the Acropolis wall in collaboration with the Centre for Stone conservation.
  • Completing the restoration of the No 21432 archaic triglyph.

2018

  • Commencing restoration works on the backing wall of the Parthenon west pediment.
  • Repairing the SE corner of the wall.
  • Contributing to the Ephorate’s of Antiquities of the city of Athens project for the reopening and modification of the old Acropolis Museum.
  • Presenting “A Greek Temple”, an online educational game.

2019

  • Restoration works on the Acropolis north wall, in the area of the disabled access elevator.
  • Preparation of studies for a total intervention in the Acropolis walls (Strategic Plan and geotechnical-static studies).
  • Completion of conservation works on the colonnade of the Propylaia north wing.
  • Participation in works aiming at enhancing the infrastructure of the archaeological site (lightning protection, inventorying electricity networks) in collaboration with other services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports (EFAPA, DAAM, and DEEMPK and others).

2020

  • Dismantling the base of the Potain crane from the west side of the Parthenon.
  • Commencing consolidation and enhancing works on the retaining walls in the area of the Mycenaean stairway.
  • Consolidating part of the buttressed wall and rock background of the north wall, in the area of the disabled access elevator.
  • Participation in enhancement works of the infrastructure of the archaeological site (installing a new disabled access elevator, lighting the monuments, and designing new routes for physically disabled users), in collaboration with other Services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports (EFAPA, DAAM, and DEEMPK and others).
  • Commencing research programmes for the study of the mechanical behaviour of clamping elements and materials, in collaboration with the NTUA and the Technical University of Crete.
