During the last quarter of 2017, will be in progress the transportation of the crane “Potain” from the west side to the interior of the Parthenon.
At the same time, the previous crane “Derrick” will be dismantled and removed due to its age. The old crane was installed inside the Parthenon in 1985 and was used continuously for 32 years in the restoration program. It will now be exhibited at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park as a monument of the history of the Acropolis restoration.
The project of dismantling and transporting the pieces of the cranes will be done with the help of a third crane (a construction tower crane) set up on the north side of the Parthenon with a vertical mast height of 24m and a functional boom length of 40m.
After the completion of this project, the view of the Parthenon and the archaeological site will be greatly improved. With only one crane in use an aesthetic nuisance will be minimized, and the iconic west façade of the Parthenon will be unobstructed by the existing crane.
